A Style Guide for Your Session: Movement, Texture, and Neutral Colors

When it comes to planning your session, one of the biggest questions I get is: “What should we wear?”

The truth is, what you wear can completely shape the look and feel of your photos. My photography style is rooted in three things: movement, texture, and neutral tones. These elements work together to create images that are timeless, natural, and full of life.

Movement

Clothing that flows and moves with you always photographs beautifully. Think of a dress that catches the breeze, a skirt that twirls, or a shirt with a little looseness that feels effortless. Movement in clothing adds energy to your photos—it makes them feel alive, authentic, and less “posed.”

Texture

Texture brings richness and depth into your images. Pieces like knits, linen, lace, denim, or woven fabrics give your photos dimension, especially when captured in natural light. Texture makes even the simplest outfit look thoughtful and elevated without trying too hard.

Neutral Colors

Soft, earthy tones are the secret to timeless photos. Shades like cream, taupe, olive, rust, muted blues, or warm browns photograph beautifully and let the focus stay on you and your connection. Neutrals also work in every season, blending seamlessly with outdoor locations and natural backdrops.

A Few Quick Tips

Choose solid colors or subtle patterns—busy prints and logos can distract.

Coordinate your outfits without matching exactly. Pick tones that complement each other.

Accessorize simply. A cozy scarf, a hat, or a favorite piece of jewelry can add just the right touch.

Above all, wear what feels like you. If you’re comfortable and confident, it will always shine through.

At the end of the day, your photos should reflect your story—not just your style. Movement, texture, and neutrals are just the foundation. The real magic comes from you being fully present, comfortable, and connected. That’s when the best images happen.
